The book weaves together two narratives: One that traces the origins of sourdough bread making from ancient times to now and one that works backward, searching for a pathway from the starter in Eric’s kitchen to gold-rush era Cripple Creek, Colorado, where legend says the starter was first made. In doing so, Eric reveals the history of Western civilization itself.
