Many generations back in rural Nigeria a woman was cursed for her infidelity. The curse doomed all of her female offspring to failure in their marriages and relationships. Presently, two sisters, now grandmothers and spinsters because of the curse, live together in bustling Lagos. Their daughters are also cursed. Monife, daughter one, commits suicide when the love of her life marries another. Ebu, Monife’s cousin, gives birth to Eniiyi, who appears to be 100 percent the reincarnation of Monife, who has died on the same day as Eniiyi’s entry into the world. While one question is whether Eniiyi will finally be able to escape the curse, the far more fun plotline is whether Ebu and Eniiyi can escape the superstitions of the grandmas. The grandmas still have one foot back in village life and one in modern Lagos. While the grandmas succumb to superstitions, the younger generation hang out in bars, watch Tik Tok on their phones, text each other racy messages, and placate their moms and grandmothers while sneaking away with boys in their brand new cars.
